About Rock and Roll Brunch

We have a bad habit.

Every few weeks, a few of us end up at some restaurant and talk music, especially that falls under that broad umbrella of “punk-rock” and “indie”. It’s not a bad habit, per se; it’s just that we usually end up having too many cups of coffee and cutting the chat off too soon (even though it’s already gone on for far too long). We all have a similar perspective, but often different opinions, so the conversations always feels interesting.

One day it occurred to us that we should record it.

Being devout listeners of a handful of great podcasts, we decided to find out if we could follow in these footsteps. Basically, we intend to do what we always do: meet up for greasy, eggy food and talk about music. The only difference is that Josh’s iPhone will be capturing our conversation.

I suppose there will be a few other elements that will make this feel a little like a podcast. We will be formally reviewing some records for each episode and playing songs from these records. On occasion, we also intend to host contests for our listeners where they can win music or merch (or whatever we can get our hands on).

We’re excited about this opportunity to share our ideas about music. More than that, though, we’re excited about having a reason to get together and stuff pancakes into our pudgy, stubbly faces.

Theme Song

When we decided to put together this podcast, one of our first considerations was the “theme song” we’d play at the beginning of each episode. We really didn’t want to steal someone else’s song, so we started considering the other options we had.

The three of us (that’s Josh, Chris, and Dane) have played music with each other for a while now, so we thought we’d take a stab at writing and recording our own theme song. The idea to write our own song came from Chris and, really, the riff is his. The “narrative,” though, was all Josh; he wanted our theme song give off the impression of some dude waking up to his alarm, shoving all his empty beer bottles aside, plugging in his guitar, and rocking out.

The three of us wrote and recorded this song on October 18th, 2010 at around 6:00 PM CST at a practice space in downtown Algonquin, IL. It took us approximately an hour to write, run through, and record, and that includes the beer bottles and Josh’s groaning noises. The result is a little sloppy and raw, but that, combined with the song’s pop-punk vibe, was what we were going for; if we didn’t want that, we would have put a little more time into the writing and recording…

Chris played both guitar tracks, Josh played bass, and Dane played drums. We intend to play this song (and a shortened version) as the intro and closing to each episode of Rock and Roll Brunch
